Quantifying the degree of variability in the morphology (i.e. overall form) of handaxes from sites in Africa, the Levant, South Asia and East Asia. A better understanding of their 3-D morphological variability offers the potential to reconstruct hominin technological and cultural decision-making, as well as the dispersal of hominins around the globe. A specific study was initiated this year with the Prehistoric Center at Tarragona, Spain (Funded by the Gerda Henkel foundation) to investigate spheroids, a stone tool type present in African and Eurasian archeological sites attributed to the Oldowan and Acheulian cultural periods.
